Search Engine Friendly URLs – URL ReWriting

September 13th, 2011 by admin No comments »

Whether you are a start-up business or a multi national company, a professionally designed website will allow you to sell your products/services more efficiently and successfully to the global market.

Letting a Search Engine index your Homepage is not enough because people often search for exact product names. For instance, if you own a Cricket store you would find that while some people do search for “Cricket Bats”, they usually search for a specific brand or make. Hence it is exteremely important to include your product and category names in the page url to make it easily accessible through navigation. These URLs are also known as search engine friendly or clean urls.

Search Engine friendly URLs are proven to be one of the best and quickest ways to improve the site usability and search rankings of your website. Most e-commerce sites are database driven and many pre-built shopping carts come with dynamic urls such as www.yourwebsite.co.uk/showproducts.asp?id=65&cat=Category%20Name.

This presents a huge problem for search engines spiders as they may have trouble navigating-to and indexing your product pages. This style of URLs can be hard to read, and can prevent some search engines from indexing all the pages of your site. Research suggests that it may not be as great an issue for some of the major search engines as it once was; however, it is worth noting the recommendation from Google’s webmaster guidelines stating:

If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a “?” character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few“.

At Protos, we are always ahead of evolving web design issues, hence all our e-commerce sites use a specialised URL Re-Writing mechanism that converts dynamic URLs to Search Engine friendly URLs that are easily cached by all the major search engines including Google, Bing, Yahoo or MSN.

Our URLs E.g.:
www.yourwebsite.co.uk/your-category-name/sub-category/your-product-name.htm

Here’s another thing to compare when selecting a web designing company for your business.

SEO for an E-commerce website

September 13th, 2011 by admin No comments »

Normally, e-commerce sites have lower traffic but a higher income per visitor rate than a static HTML website. Thus, it is very cost effective for an e-commerce site to spend more time and money on Search Engine Optimisation than any other traditional marketing methods.

According to various sources, “Search Engines generate more than 60-70% of sales for a large number companies”. That’s the reason that all our designs emphasize on meaningful identifiers and targeted keywords with appropriate use of Meta Tags, ‘no-follows’, Robots.txt and HTML/XML Sitemaps.
